Abstract
Odisha possesses one of the richest temple traditions in India, where architecture, sculpture, ritual, and religious philosophy are intricately intertwined. Among the various religious currents that shaped the sacred landscape of the region, Tantricism played a significant role in influencing temple design, iconographic programmes, and ritual practices from the early medieval period onward. The temples of Bhubaneswar, Jajpur, Konark, and other sacred centres preserve numerous symbolic representations associated with Tantric Shaivism, Shaktism, and Vajrayana Buddhism. These include fierce deities, Yoginis, Bhairavas, Mithuna figures, mandala-like spatial arrangements, esoteric symbols, and depictions of ritual practices that reflect complex metaphysical concepts concerning cosmic energy, divine union, fertility, protection, and spiritual transformation. This paper examines the manifestation of Tantric symbolism in the temple architecture and iconography of Odisha. It analyses the symbolic significance of architectural components, sculptural motifs, and sacred spatial organization within the broader framework of Tantric philosophy. Drawing upon archaeological evidence, art historical interpretations, textual traditions, and field observations, the study explores how Tantric concepts were embedded within temple structures to create sacred spaces that facilitated ritual experience and spiritual realization. The paper argues that Odisha's temples function not merely as religious monuments but as symbolic expressions of a Tantric worldview in which the human body, cosmic order, and divine energy are interconnected. Through a critical examination of selected temples and sculptural programmes, the study highlights the contribution of Tantric traditions to the development of Odisha's unique architectural and artistic heritage.
