Abstract

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 represents a transformative framework for reforming India's education system by integrating traditional knowledge with contemporary educational practices. Recognizing India's rich intellectual heritage, the policy emphasizes the inclusion of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), encompassing ancient sciences, philosophy, languages, arts, culture, indigenous technologies, environmental ethics, and value-based education. This paper examines the inclusion of traditional knowledge in NEP 2020 and analyzes its role in strengthening democratic values and participatory citizenship. The study adopts a qualitative, policy-analysis approach based on the provisions of NEP 2020, government reports, and relevant scholarly literature. The findings suggest that the integration of traditional knowledge promotes cultural identity, critical thinking, ethical reasoning, social responsibility, and respect for diversity, which are fundamental principles of a democratic society. Furthermore, the policy encourages multilingual education, experiential learning, and interdisciplinary approaches that foster inclusivity and equal educational opportunities. While the incorporation of traditional knowledge presents significant opportunities to preserve cultural heritage and enhance holistic education, challenges remain in curriculum design, teacher preparedness, standardization, and the balance between traditional wisdom and scientific inquiry. The paper concludes that effective implementation of Indian Knowledge Systems within NEP 2020 can contribute to the development of informed, responsible, and culturally grounded citizens capable of participating actively in democratic governance. It recommends sustained institutional support, capacity building, curriculum innovation, and evidence-based pedagogical practices to realize the democratic objectives envisioned by the National Education Policy 2020.
